The Poet of the week: Alessandro Bastoni

The protagonist of our column “The Poet of the week”On this day of Serie A he is the defender of Inter and the national team Alessandro Bastoni.

The former Atalanta he showed off with a great goal from outside the box and an assist to kiss for Skriniar in the San Siro match that saw the Nerazzurri beat Lazio for 2-1. And to think that just against the Biancocelesti in the first round, Bastoni experienced his only “bad night” of this championship: he committed the hand ball that resulted in the penalty for Lazio and the beginning of the comeback of the men of Sarri. On the return, Bastoni redeemed himself properly with his best performance of the season. The Inter defender for the first time in Serie A scored an assist and a goal in the same match. The lightning left foot that he kicked from outside the box is also his first goal “by foot” since he joined Inter: so far, in fact, he had scored only 2 goals, both with a header.

His game, however, was not only positive in the offensive phase, but it was positive at 360 °: in addition to the goal and the assist, on Sunday evening Bastoni also put on the scoresheet 71 passes completed, 8 duels won and 7 balls recovered. For Simone Inzaghi is a very titular: 24 games in the season, of which 6 in the Champions League (out of 6 total) and 18 in the league (out of 20 total), he only missed two matches due to injury. The Nerazzurri club has armored him with a 4 million euro a year contract until 2024 and he has all the credentials to become a real Inter column in the years to come.

There will also be a need for him in National, where at the moment the very titular and untouchable are Bonucci e Chiellini, but after the world championship in Qatar (if Italy were to qualify) Bastoni will certainly be able to have his say also in blue. Chiellini, in fact, given his age and especially his numerous injuries, does not have many years in front of him with the national team and the Nerazzurri defender is certainly the number one candidate to replace him.

They are both left-handed and physically strong, but Bastoni is certainly a more modern defender: fast, skilled with the ball and chain, he knows how to set, he is able to churn out assists and to make excellent progressions both on the flank and in the middle of the field. In addition, he has personality to spare, he does not feel the pressure and at 22 he is already used to wearing heavy sweaters and limestone important stages. In short, Alessandro Bastoni is a real jewel of the present and future Italian generation, he just has to continue to amaze how he is doing.
